A BRIEF HISTORY OF
THE MACAU CHINESE GENERAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Before 1911, the businessmen of Macau had no commercial association organized and whenever events arose and needed them to collectively discuss and solve situation, they did so at Jinghu Hospital.

In 1911, in view of the fact that there were increasingly more Chinese businessmen in Macau, Mr. Shiu Ying-chau jointly with other businessmen initiated to organize a chamber of commerce and presented project to the Macau Government.  Consequently on September 14, 1912, the Lisbon government approved registration of the Macau Chamber of Commerce.  It was officially established the next year under the first directorship of Mr. Shiu Ying-chau,  with Tung Sin Tong as the provisional office of the Chamber and later at an estate owned by the Hong Kung Temple Council at No. 4, Rua do Pagode.  In the meantime, the Chamber was also approved for registration by the then Chinese Government Department of Industry and Commerce under the name of  Macau Overseas Chinese General Chamber of Commerce.

In 1916, it was officially re-named Macau Chinese General Chamber of Commerce, also known as Macau Chamber of Commerce..

In 1930, Mr. Lo Chak-sun was elected director of the Chamber, and Mr. Wong Yee-chiu vice-director.  As the Chamber's office at Rua do Pagode was too old and small it was agreed to raise funds and purchase the premises at no. 18 Largo do Senado.

Since 1932, Mr. Fan Kit-pan was director and in 1935, the directorship system was changed to chairmanship and he was elected for seven consecutive terms.  For the purpose of commercial development, Commodities Exhibitions were held inside the Chamber.

In 1956, the term of directors and supervisors was altered from one year to two years.  In 1957, the Chamber decided to raise funds and build its office premises to cope with its continuing development, and work was completed in September the next year.  In 1968, the system of Boards of directors and supervisors was changed into that of a council.

In 1980, the council system was changed into that of a Board.  From 1950 to 1983, Mr. Ho Yin was consecutively elected chairman for eighteen terms and president of the Board for two terms.  For more than thirty years, he had been directing the work of the Chamber, devoting efforts and donations, and making great contributions to the Chamber.  Mr. Ma Man-kei since 1950, Mr. Chui Tak-kei since 1953, and Mr. Cheng Kung since 1968, had been elected vice-presidents assisting Mr. Ho Yin to direct the Chamber affairs with all their efforts.

On December 6, 1983, president Mr. Ho Yin passed away due to a cancer disease that failed for cure with a great number of treatments.  During his whole life, Mr. Ho Yin had been adhering firmly to his patriotic standing and showing great concerns to the unification of our mother country.  He made remarkable contributions to the development of the Chamber as well as the social stability and economical prosperity of Macau.  His death certainly was a big loss to the society of Macau and the Chamber.

The completion of "Edif. de ACM" and later "Edif. Comercial China" signifies not only achieving active development of the Chamber, but also laying a strong base for further development.

For over eighty years, under the joint efforts of all the directors, supervisors and our members, together with the strong support from various community sectors, the Chamber has seen continuing development and achieved far-reaching influence.
